Sabriel - Garth Nix I'm really not a fantasy-world fantasy reader, which was why I put off reading this book for months after buying it. I know some of my friends have enjoyed this series a lot, though, so I kept thinking I should at least give it a try.

I have to admit I really had a hard time getting into it. The first half of the book was a struggle to get through; I suppose it's interesting for people who want their magic systems to be all detailed and built up and... gah, it was so boring. However, at some point past the halfway stage it started getting more interesting (more action? less explanations of magic, which was actually never really explained anything, so way too much detail for something that was still far too vague in the end), so that's what pulled it up to three stars in the end for me.

Sabriel herself was a fairly okay main character, although I never really felt I got to "know" her properly, and the idea of a badly prepared 18-year-old suddenly having all that weight thrown on her shoulders was more interesting than the execution. And I didn't care for the vague romance in the book either... I never really figured out why Sabriel should have fallen for Touchstone, apart from him being the first young man she'd seen naked. Or hung out with at all. Although I guess there are worse reasons than those, when one is eighteen.

I vaguely entertained the idea of reading the next books in this trilogy, at some point before the ending, but... dunno if I can be bothered, really.
